This might be a really weird thread, but I'm going to talk seriously because I feel like it's the end for games. So, is it the end for games, or are we just getting older?

Games nowadays are really bad; it's not fun anymore. I don't enjoy playing modern games nowadays, and it's because of tons of reasons, like:

1 - Most of the games need to be purchased.
2 - Remastering the game more than 100 times until your PC catches on fire.
3 - Making updates just for money; the biggest example: Trash Royale.
4 - Too many buttons on the screen, and it takes 3 hours until you find the start button.
5 - The games are very complicated.
6 - Waste 6 years of your life just to unlock 350 skins out of 4000
7 - Too many hackers.
8 - Horror games do not scare you as they used to before. Example: FNAF (Old One), Resident Evil (New One). Before, you used to get jump scared, now you just move around while someone is chasing you in the middle of somewhere with a horror music playing in the background.
9 - Pay to Win, I don't think I want to talk about this.
10 - *Buy a new PC to try this game*, once you try it, it turns out to be trash.
- And many more reasons I didn't mention.

Nowadays, the only way to save your game from dying is to just NOT update it anymore, make the last big update, and then leave the game on its own forever, or just make updates fixing bugs. Lots of games started as a good game, and some players was like: 'There is no way this game will die,' until it got famous. Even more famous. More famous means more crazy updates. More crazy updates mean more money. More money leads to destroying the game and selling it to other game companies. Example: Mope io, Agar io...

Tell me what do you guys think. Is it just me, or is everyone getting this feeling?

Approximately I feel shit like u. On app store I see farming shit games that are all like each other with different look and theme. The main gameplay is the same.

So I just installed gunslingermod for STALKER Call Of Pripyat and it's fine.
I like this nostalgia when played old games being young, we played it with friends together on 1 PC and bein happy as fuck. There must be some games u will love but u gonna feel that feeling only when u loved it and played it full and u sure u will do it again. (fcking stalker i finished it like 20+ times).

Anyway idc games that much since idk when. Idc my pc but the nostalgia feeling of playing games u love is coming suddenly.
The only way is to learn a shit eventually and do ur own game thats all.
/but who cares

The problem is the desire to grow economically. Every company needs to earn more money than last year.
How to sell more games? Make it attractive to more people (the mainstream). You can see it everywhere: Lootboxes, Battlepass, 0815 game mechanics. That is what the mainstream gamer wants (at least, the companys think that way).

Comparison to other things
You can see that trend on other products as well. Every phone looks kinda the same (The differences vary between boring stuff like: Color, Size,...).
Or gamepads/controllers: They all look the same nowadays, compare that to a N64 controller
On one hand this is a good thing because everyone knows how to use it (like: right analog stick is aiming, left analog stick is moving) which makes learning new things easier and comfortable.
On the other hand this stops creativity and progress. Maybe there are way better controller designs that we didnt think about because we stopped at the XBOX/Playstation Layout. (Example: The QWERTY keyboard layout is not the most efficient layout but nobody wants to re-learn how to use a keyboard)

I only like this "everyone does it the same way" approach if it is in fact better (like the gamepad/controller example - the N64 controller is not really good).
But common game mechanics (lootboxes, watch ad for 100 ressources) are not fun. Obviously those are psychological tricks to make you pay more. They are equivalent to supermarkets that show fake discounts.

Back to the roots
Niche games are way more fun, but not everyone likes niche games. These games are fun because they exist for the gaming experience itself - for a few nerds that really want to understand the complex game mechanics. Many old games are niche games: They all had a complete distinct controller layout, gameplay, etc.
The problem is that you have to invest much time in those kind of games just to be playable. And people nowadays are used to scrolling TikToks and cant even focus for 30mins straight...
Just look at mobile game tutorials: Click here, click here, click here (and you cant do anything else) - thats not a good tutorial. But those kind of tutorials keep you engaged so that you dont immediatly stop playing.

A new trend is also to the test the final product on the customer. Thats why big games are released with thousand bugs. Companys save money this way. People told me, that this is the case with cars as well. But we dumbfucks keep buying the new shit, so nothing will change

@user NanuPlayer: Game devs have to earn money too. I don't see a problem with your first point. If you want good games you have to pay for them. I mean: You also have to pay for movies or music. Why not for games?

I kind of agree with most of your other points but they are only true for some games. Many modern games do not have a super complicated UI or are very complicated in general. There are still some games with great free updates (e.g. Cyberpunk patches!) and many games still don't use pay 2 win mechanics or skins.

So my clear answer is: No, it's not over with games. Don't play huge triple A games if you are annoyed by prices. Don't play multiplayer games if you are annoyed by cheaters. Don't play free 2 play games if you dislike pay 2 win or skins. There are many great indie games which don't have these problems. The number of games released per day on Steam increases each year. You have the choice and there are actually so many good titles that you can't even play all of them.

I understand your concerns about the current state of gaming, but I respectfully disagree with the notion that purchasing games is a negative aspect. Game development involves significant time, effort, and resources, and developers deserve compensation for their hard work. The purchase price helps support the gaming industry, allowing developers to continue creating innovative and high-quality experiences. While free-to-play models exist, they often rely on in-game purchases, microtransactions, or ads to generate revenue, which can also impact the overall gaming experience. It's essential to find a balance that acknowledges the value of developers' work while ensuring fair and enjoyable experiences for players.

I agree in most of the points.

Monetizing a game is not a big deal in my opinion. As long as you get what you pay for. Although you can say that is half of the time not the case.

Pay2Win is a tool to squeeze more money out of people and to avoid losses through piracy.
P2W Games can be enjoyable, to the point where yourself want to take part in that. But in my experience that is almost never the case. I did in APB: Reloaded and I probably dumped about 350€ into it over a time period of 7 years. But I played that game for over 1500 hours, all of it with joy, so I can live with that.

I think the tendency of enjoyable game releases goes to indie developers or smaller studios right now. It seems that these groups do better in releasing stuff that people like to play. Battlebit Remastered seems like an example for that. There's less bureaucracy involved while development and no choices to be made by people who have no idea what they are dealing with, only interested in business profits.

The same problems can be related to other industries.
If it's about phones, car industry, entertainment section (movies, music...) and many more. It's a common thing nowadays and has been explained already above by someone else.

The only thing from a consumer perspective what you can do is abandon and don't support what you dislike.
I rarely play any new video games nowadays. I'm sticking to Garrys Mod right now, because it's great and gives me for a few hours a week the amount of enjoyable gameplay that I need. Other than that I just play games I used to before, sometimes add released mods to them that improve the gameplay experience (NFS Carbon - Battle Royale Mod, NFS ProStreet - Pepega Mod,...)

@user DC: @user Gaios: Okay, well, I would spend my money on games like Half-Life, Gmod, L4D2, and all Valve games, of course. But why would I buy a game that keeps getting updated, remastered, and players are leaving it slowly? Example : Minecraft

Now, if you don't know Yuri's Revenge, this game was literally free for 9 years until CNCNET group came and removed all websites you could download it from. Most of them were not even crack websites, and they made it with money, so now you have to purchase it to play, without even credits from EA Games. But that's fine; I would honestly spend my money to buy it. If CS2D needed to be purchased to play it, I would honestly purchase it. Why? Because these games are not getting updated anymore, and players still like them. Even though the game is considered dead, you can do tons of fun things in CS2D and create your own server without an annoying headache.

I tried to make a server at CS1.6, and I downloaded more than 7 programs JUST TO RUN THE FRICKING SERVER. Before, you could just open HLDS, and you're done. Now, I remember running Gmod, HL2, Minecraft on the highest options on a potato PC. But slowly, they started getting updated, and I couldn't run them anymore. So, I bought a new PC, and again, SLOWLY, they started getting more updated. And i am absolutely sure that Minecraft textures keeps getting remastered every 3 or 4 updates. This game used to be 200MB; now it's 1GB.
I left most of these games, and now I just play the old games that I was born with. The only game company i feel like it succeeded is Valve.

Now, let's talk about IO games. Some players were like: 'These games will never die, right?' Nope, we were completely wrong, now the guy who owns Agar.io and Mope.io is dumb. Simply, King of Agar.io dude sold Agar.io to Miniclip, and Miniclip ruined the game in less than a month. King of Agar.io was working on Mope.io with his friend, and they both had authority in the game. So, Koa's friend sold Mope.io to Addicted Games. Again, the game did not last for 1 month, and it died.
Now Taming.io, for example, I played this game since it was released, but I left it. I talked to the owner of Taming.io; he said he won't kill the game like what Koa did to Agar.io and Mope.io. But yes, now it's dying slowly. This game should be about animals, forests, and biomes and almost like moomoo.io, but this dude is making it an alien game by adding some weird animals to the game. Yes, the textures keep getting remastered every time. But I still can play it at the highest settings. but no, he turned the game from animals, forests, and crafting to an alien game where you have to purchase these weird animals to win. Honestly, I used to be a pay-to-win player, but I'm sick of this. Seriously, I can't take it anymore. 95% of the games are ending the same way.

Your observations are certainly right. Games are getting bigger and less efficient. Especially when they receive tons of updates and new features. Unfortunately it's pretty normal that this makes them bigger in filesize, less performant and also more complex.

Still, this isn't "ALL" games. It only happens to some of them. There's a ton of other games which aren't affected by stupid deals or inefficient updates. There are many loyal developers who don't sell their stuff and prefer keeping full control and ownership. Developers who are concerned about performance and small file sizes. So luckily you still have the choice.

Just set an example. Don't support games you dislike. Play and buy stuff which is good and stop playing games which are bad. If enough people act like this, developers/publishers are forced to change.

Back in the "golden days" of gaming, the ratio of good to bad games was probably as bad as it is now. You just remember the gems. Really selective memory.

But yeah, the game industry really develops in a bad direction. There still are a few awesome game dev companies like Larian Studios. But some of the companies that were good in the past have dropped significantly.

Also you must know that you are NOT the target audience of game publishers. There are two main target audiences:

* 12-16 yo kids who take the credit cards of their parents to buy tons of skins
* middle aged housewifes who are bored but have basically limitless amounts of money for microtransactions.

The biggest game on the PC market right now is Roblox.
The market for mobile games is so incredibly much larger than the one for PC/consoles that it's basically not worth it to make PC games anymore.

Scum is great game I've been playing for 2 years now. It's DayZ but more realistic and its still getting more content. It was very buggy in 2018 from what I've heard, but now in 2024 it's rocking better than ever.

That's a false perspective you're giving out on game's metabolism which is also modifiable (sped up/slowed down) by custom servers. Yes there is toilet stuff but it doesn't happen often during combat. And if you can't take a poop, your character will poop himself. Definitely doesnt affect pvp gameplay, just makes the clothes you're wearing dirty and at the same time, if you get wounded and have dirty clothes, you run the risk of infection. Never saw hindrance with it during pvp, just go early as possible and don't wait.

I have many criteria when deciding what games I consider worth getting, to sum things up, I don't really get any newer games but playing older games that have better reputations. I don't have a lot of time to spend on playing games either so it does helps.

I do agree with most of your points, but some of them can be rectified by purely selecting games that satisfy your criteria such as your trusted game publishers, etc. If you don't have fun then what's the point of video games? What we could do is not support those games that don't resonate. Maybe by then, we might see less idiotic games.
