Simon did that so he would have to implement it. I don't know how the math behind that stuff works
Since all the underlying logic for visibility has only tile precision it wouldn't work very well and come with a lot of problems when used in CS2D.
I totally agree however that it looks much better than the CS2D FoW.

That is done via Render Texture (FBO)
BlitzMax does not support low level shader programming, so this is rather unoptimized and inefficient.
I have written better version of this system in Unity, I'll hopefully will make some posts about that soon enough.
