Gabe is having to sacrifice his very life energy to create Half-Life 3. His body must take strain of all video game-creating talent within him, converting it to pure fat and facial hair. Finally, when he reaches critical mass, his very form will collapse in on itself, leaving behind only the very first copy of Half-Life 3. All will be declared right with the world and a new golden age of civilization will begin.
