Sorry you were forced. Since you don't actually believe, you cannot know what people have with religion.

The question is not what people want from religion.

The question is - what religion wants from people?

Think about it. As any organisation, religion has to maintain it`s infrastructure. But it does not sell anything. How to turn profit? And here`s where tithes come into action.

But how to make people tithe regularly and abundantly? Embracing change is a sure-fire way to scare people off. They fear change, fear the unknown that change brings, and would turn away from church that promises uncertainty and turmoil.

So church, by nature, has to be conservative. What`s worse, it has to be conservative enough to pander to fears of your average Joe. Which means opposing any and all advance or change - be it social, scientific or technological.

And here`s where we come to the crux of an issue - society, which wellbeing depends on opposing the advances of humanity is inherently regressive. It`s a disease, pure and simple. It will continue to poison and slow humanity as a whole until it will be eradicated like smallpox - globally and without any misguided mercy.

Well it is based on opinion, so you cannot state that as a fact.

@user AliceShade: Well church is a commitment, can't say it doesn't have change. Being gay will slow down the reproduction rate--but do we really need more people?

It`s a commitment to regress.

Dark Ages were the golden age of Christianity - pope had the authority over whole of Old World in one way or another. Hell, Papal bulla had formally given Spain all the rights for New World.

Now, ask yourself... Why the ages were called DARK?

Actual advance began again after people began to ignore the opinion of church. Ever since then, history shows abundantly clear how church`s power had been whittled down to make advance possible.

Religion is openly destructive and regressive concept, with no redeeming qualities. It panders to lowest and loftiest feelings of humans, takes advantage of their weakness and stringently opposes any and all attempts to liberate people from the misfortunes that their weaknesses cause.

Abject misery is the lifeblood of church, the reason why it can continue existing. In a world where everyone is safe, sated and warm, no consolation from "higher forces" would be necessary, and therefore, misery will never end while the religious have any say on the matter. Advance all that you can, but religion will create the aforementioned misery if not beaten down ruthlessly at the merest attempt to.

I don't see how believing in a higher power or "GOD" is slowing down society, if you're not praying you're on forums posting.

This is a "freedom" forum, gays should be allowed their rights, just as religion followers.

Oh, I don`t begrudge anyone the right to believe in whatever gobbledygook they choose to. Personal beliefs is personal business.

My beef is when those beliefs are taken outside of one`s own mind and applied to everyone else without any regard for their opinion on the matter.

Frankly, if believing in yhwh gives one right to be homophobic, I`ll start exterminating humanity today, because it`s my sincere belief world will be better off with every last of those mofos dead.

Lousy proposition, no? But if my, I again reiterate, rather sincere belief that it`s a Good Thing TM to kill as many humans as possible is eschewed by humanity as atrocious, then by whatever is that you hold holy, your beliefs should be held in equal contempt.

For fuck's sake, God doesn't have ANYTHING to do with religion.

Religion was made to scare people, that if they steal a fucking candy they will burn in hell for eternity. Then came the idea to get money for documents and scrolls, that "clean" people from their sins, then they started burning people (it didn't really happen in this order), then the Bible was re-written. Hell, it was being re-written every fucking week, so the church could get money and not lose it's followers.

Coop, read my post, the one before yours.

Religion = living by someone else's standards

God = hope that, if you fuck up, there will be that guy with a huge-ass beard saying "Well, this guy deserves a second chance" and saving your ass.

I think that we all should be respected equally (except some people, you know who I am talking about) and that everyone deserves to be happy.

Well you clearly don't believe in religion, so how would you know? Religion has changed my life and made it better, there is nothing you can say that makes me think otherwise.
