Eh... I feel uncomfortable on this thread as a never bought a program, video game, MP3, movie, etc. in my life.
The fact is, pirate sites such as ThePirateBay are here to stay and even with more shit such as SOPA, PIPA and ACTA - it wont stop (the piracy). In all honesty I see the pirates ( ie. the people who rip the games ) as relatively clever, who ever can remove any copy protection and some sort of DRM must know what they are doing. The people who download and play the game illegally, on the other hand, is just a show off of the fact that you are an ignorant and quite moronic. I buy all the games I play, if I want to test it I go to a friend who has the game or ask someone I know who has an opinion.
Bottom-line: Real men get jobs and afford the shit that the kiddies download for free. I personaly preffer 1st to download the game usualy, then if its good and if i like it i buy it, idk whats the ppl´s problem and nobody wants to pay 10 euro for a game (there are more expensive but u dont buy a game every day O.o). Yates: this picture is kinda true. of course it's something different when you "steal" something digitally because you can make an unlimited amount of copies for free. BUT I already explained that you still cause financial damage like you also do when you steal "real" goods (because you "consume" a product without paying, so the producer gets less money for the same work). that's why I would still say that piracy is pretty much like stealing.
I would define theft as: taking (or copying) something which is not yours without permission. (and you get permission to take something which is not yours by paying the price which is declared by the owner)

The problem with that picture is that the person probably would have not bought the game if it were not up for pirated download, so there really is minimal loss to the industry ( though indie game dev'ers will take a wallop in a sense that they most probably do not sell as many copies as big titles such as EA and Valve ). I am generally against Piracy, however, I do see some points where I find it alright in a way, and also in a way some loopholes
What I sometimes do is when I need a program and the trial doesn't last long enough and I don't have the money to buy it yet is that I get a serial from some site and buy the program/game later.
I do not think that stealing music/movies is alright at all - I get my music out of the radio - with the right radio stations you actually get whole songs for free, after all we do not pay radio stations for nothing, and that way the musicians get payed too unlike they would if I got the songs over YouTube. The same goes for films/TV shows; I just get them over (online)TV, and if I really want a film/song that I can't get over TV/Radio I just buy it - seriously, they're usually not too expensive.
The only type of "piracy" I ever really do is with sheet music - I find it should be more than enough to get the music as mp3/CD. Piracy all the way when you got no video game store nearby @
DannyDeth: actually most games don't have a real "copyright-protection" on it, I've seen it on some pdf files and music though Well, most of the games I play have to either be downloaded entirely or activated through Steam or another service like it, so I don't know which time period your games come from.
like cd games, ripping doesn't take much effort-->but yeah I see how piracy from steam or cloud games would be a more difficult task

It's not, i've reported already like 8 knows of mine that were using a illegal software to crack steam games, of course ill not mention the name. Well, as was said multiple times before, it's okay if the harm isn't that serious - I usually try out some single player games, or I can download something if the loss from my downloading it won't be that big. I wouldn't hate myself if I downloaded an EA or a Valve game - or Minecraft, seeing as although he's an indie dev, he still makes boatloads of money. It doesn't apply to online games or MMOs, I always buy those.

If I buy a DVD in the store, it's completely fine to show it to a friend in my house. It's also completely fine if i bring the DVD to his house and watch it then.
It should also be fine to send the DVD to a friend to let him watch it, over the internet.
To what persons am i allowed to send it ?
You can't show the dvd in a bar, because a bar is an open place and everyone can enter the bar and then watch the movie. So in the internet, you cannot upload a movie and spread the link to everyone. But to who CAN you send the link? I think that's the real problem.. i think it's okay to pirate stuff for like 1 time use, if the demo doesn't get you what you want. like i changed the Stranded II source and i didn't want to buy blitz3d so i pirated it, compiled the source, and uninstalled blitz. If I'd got arrested for downloading illegall stuff, I would spend around 5-10 years in jail.
My whole computer is fill'd with games from thepiratebay.
I almost fell out of my chair there! Still though, people find buying things on steam complicated too. Srssly tah..wheres the "plus one" button when you need one. (Spelling intended)
