Hello, you know me.. ExtremeConquerer, I was sticking in this community for let's say 1.5 year, I noticed there was some unfair bans running around, I mean like for example.. me, I break 1 rule in the Forums, I get banned in everything, file archive... messages etc.. but I don't really know why it is necessary to temp ban in the whole forum just for breaking ONE/TWO rules in a different section, it's quite unfair.. I never and never saw anyone complaining about this because they're scared to get banned just about this, but not only about mods, I even talk about @ DC: because he did it when I broke one rule at Forums section., He temp banned me in everything, I quite don't understand.. I only see one mod that is fair... @ SQ:.. Bans for the real reason, the required time, and the required section.. For example in real life, you got banned from a class (in school), will you get banned in all other different classes, It's not needed because when he breaks a rule again in whatever class, he'll get ban in it.. It's really really unfair to ban people in everything for breaking in one thing..
Here's another real life example, your friend haves 2 phones actually and you broke one, the other one will break too without touching it??, well this is just an example because i'm not going to way to way..
The thing is, it's the moderators choice (trust me I've been at this before). If the moderator which banned you feels as if you will be a pain in other sections too, then the moderator will ban you in all of them. Simply to stop more violations. But for example if you keep uploading very bad files, the moderator may only ban you in the file archive for ignoring those warnings, as your current posts in the forum section may be very helpful!
See section bans as a friendly warning. If you get a ban in all of them you're doing it wrong.
@ Yates: I know you aren't talking about me only, but DC did it to me, 3 days & temp banned on everything.. DC doesn't know me as good as i'am, I actually don't go in a file and troll using dialects & stuff.. I try to make my launguage proper for other people would have the ability to read it at least and understand it..
and about this thread I usually see some mods doing it the whole time wich is unfair.
I can confirm with what Yates said. Even though it is bit unfair to be temp.banned for other sections which you weren't involved in those, it's still a temp.ban and you can't argue with this (as long it is perfectly justified in terms of the severity and the violation you've did).
There's nothing you can do really with the exception that you can do is just understanding the rules and you'll be in a safe side without being worried like for example *omg I am temp.banned on every section, whyyyy unfair mods and dc!!!*. Simple as that.
P.S: In case if you ever feel that there is something wrong regarding the moderating actions done by a moderator wrongly, simply send a PM to DC with all the explanations you have got and the temp.ban you had as well. This same applies in case if DC gave you a temp.ban but locking all sections then go and ask him however it won't be a big deal because in the end it's only DC's decision when he temp.bans a user that broke a rule.
P.S: In case if you ever feel that there is something wrong regarding the moderating actions done by a moderator wrongly, simply send a PM to DC
Nooo! Wrong! NEVER do this.
DC doesn't give the slightest fuck about ban complains simply because he trusts the moderators to act correctly. And 99% of the time the moderators do the right thing.
Awww, you didn't notice me section-only banning ? Guess I'll have to ban you now to show you that. Jk.
Think of it this way - we come everyday and see rule violations, spam and so on. You eventually get tired of it. The users change all the time and there's just non stop violations just because new users are not aware of them yet. Eventually you bundle up everyone together and ban everyone equally. I don't do this MOST of the time and I try to keep fair. I section ban all the time since like half a year ago and I was the only one to do it (then later GeoB99 did it too).
It's a bother to select section to ban on. It's just easier to ban you on whole forum as it's preventing you from breaking rules anywhere else.
I once met a person who spammed under his file when he received negative comments so I banned him there. He then went to forum threads and spammed there so I banned him there, he then started sending people messages and they told me so I banned him on message section and finally his file was violating guidelines (stolen content) so I banned him on file archive. This would have been a lot easier if I banned him completely at the very beginning, but I tried to be fair.
You can't blame us or DC to fully banning you. I have a fool-proof solution though: Don't break rules !
@ Inflexion: If you have compaints about temp bans then please provide the specific cases you want to complain about (links). Otherwise it's impossible to discuss.
Moreover it's important to know that it's "standard" that you get a ban for all website sections when you violate a rule. That's because it's the default setting and we have this setting as default because past showed that people tend to get angry when they receive a temp ban and this results in more rule violations. So it's better for everyone who is involved to just temp ban everything so the person can calm down and has no way to flame about it.
I know that the above problems only occurs with some users and not everyone but it still seems to be the best and easiest way to deal with it.
Hopefully this helps you to undestand how things are handled here. Maybe you can accept it with this additional knowledge.
I think the durations are the real problem for "unfair" temp bans.
The duration should be quite short for small violations. The default duration is currently 3 days though which is too high for the majority of violations. It might make sense to reduce this default value to something like 6 hours because at the moment I don't see many critical violations. So currently 6 hours or even less should be enough for most temp bans.
@ DC: But with 6 hour bans you run into the issue of people not noticing a ban at all, e.g. you post a message before going to sleep and are going to check the forum after work (sleep + work ~= 15hours).
So you did something wrong and now you get angry about what you got for it? That's just plain dumb. It's your own fault. Don't break the rules, don't get banned. Problem solved. Face the consequences of your actions. You'll have to do that a lot later in life, so just get used to it already. It'll never be fair.
@ ohaz: oh come on... I scrolled down so much just to find somebody else write all I wanna say, dang it. Why would you break the rules anyway? If you're conscious enough to think that the bans are too severe, then why aren't you conscious enough not to break the rules? Like, come on, it's nothing impossible. Just try, and there won't be any problem with the vanning system.
